Melbourne started the game with a number of behinds, but Essendon kicked the first goal. Baker got the equaliser after several more behinds. The two sides remained equal throughout the rest of the first half but Melbourne had significantly more scoring shots.
Essendon went on the offensive early in the second half and obtained several behinds, and the ball went from one end to the other several times as the two defences traded the ball with each other. The home side were eventually rewarded with a second goal, but late in the game Simson equalised for a second time.
Melbourne added several more behinds but couldn't find a winner and the match ended in a draw despite several more chances.
Best were Aitken, Baker and Watson.
