"Pops" Heal arrived in Victoria as an established star in his native Western Australia, having finished second in the 1940 Sandover Medal. When he moved to Victoria as a naval officer during World War II he was pursued by most clubs, but after promising Collingwood first option on his services, Heal instead signed for Melbourne. He debuted midway through 1941, and played on the wing in that year's Premiership side. The next week he returned home to play in another premiership with West Perth.
He came to Victoria in his role as a naval officer during World War II, was a naval officer, stationed in Victoria as part of the war effort. Heal had already finished second in the 1940 Sandover Medal and was pursued by most Victorian clubs. After promising Collingwood first option, Heal signed for Melbourne instead and played on the wing in the 1941 flag side. The next week he returned to Perth and played in the WAFL grand final with West Perth.
Heal was in Melbourne in early 1944 and considered a chance to play some games, but never suited up for the Demons again. As coach of West Perth from 1947 to 1952 he won two premierships and remains their longest-serving coach. Heal also captained Western Australia against Victoria in 1951. He had also played interstate football in 1949 and captained the side in the 1950 Brisbane Carnival.
Heal served in the Western Australian Parliament between 1953 and 1965. He was inducted to the AFL Hall of Fame in 2010.
Heal's brother Jack also played three games for the club in 1942. Three of his sons played WAFL seniors, including Graham Heal, who appeared five times for North Melbourne in 1968.
