Biggest win at Adelaide Oval
Having won just two games in all of 2013 the Demons equalled that tally within two months of the 2014 season, holding off a fierce late comeback by the Crows in the first ever match between the two sides at the Adelaide Oval.
The Crows kicked the first goal of the game, but then conceded the next seven as Melbourne built up a lead of almost six goals. Adelaide got the last of the first half through ex-Demon Scott Thompson, then kept the Demons goalless until late in the third quarter as they gradually chipped away at the lead.
A clutch goal from Chris Dawes gave Melbourne some breathing room, and with the use of a breeze in the last quarter and Adelaide being a player down through injury looked like they were going to record their first win in South Australia since Round 2, 2001 - and their first ever at the Adelaide Oval.
Adelaide got the first goal of the quarter after three minutes, but it was the last until the 14 minute mark when Nathan Jones - who had been heavily tagged all day - won a free kick in the forward pocket and converted to extend the margin to 10 points. The Crows almost immediately responded, but two goals in a row to Mark Jamar and Dom Tyson seemingly gave the visitors breathing space again.
Shortly after Tyson's goal the Crows responded again, cutting the margin to 10 and then to nine with a behind. With 22 seconds left the Crows take advantage of a kick out on the full from James Frawley to a kick a goal which reduced the margin to three - but Melbourne successfully defended the next centre bounce and held on to win a thriller.
Best were Dawes, Vince and Tyson. Jack Viney was initially suspended for two matches for a collision with Adelaide's Tom Lynch which left Lynch with a broken jaw, but Melbourne made only the second successful appeal against a tribunal decision out of 15 and he was cleared.
Alex Georgiou was temporarily substituted for Christian Salem in the first quarter after the bump with Viney and Lynch. He returned to the field but was eventually subbed out permanently during the third quarter.
