After playing in the Calder Cannons 2004 TAC Cup premiership side, Dunn joined the Demons as a first round draft pick. He spent his first season in the VFL with Sandringham, before debuting early in 2006 as a forward. At the end of that year he returned to the VFL to play in the Sandringham premiership side.

Dunn spent almost all of his time inside 50 until Round 6, 2007 when he was first used as a tagger. From there he was often used in a run-with role. One of his side's success stories in 2008, he was controversially reported for striking Kangaroo Brent Harvey twice in a minute, though it seemed from replays that the North champion had somewhat embellished the contact.

Dunn struggled for opportunities in 2009 and spent considerable time with the Casey Demons, playing just thirteen games for the year. He started 2010 in the senior side, still playing a defensive role, and appeared in the first seven games of the year before being dropped. Returning to Casey again, Dunn kicked eight goals in a match against Box Hill and was given another chance to play up front in the senior side. Relishing a role as a defensive forward, Dunn kicked 16 goals in the last six matches of the season and made a habit of kicking clutch goals late in close games.

At the end of the season he signed a two year contract extension with the club, but despite playing seven of the first nine games of the season and kicking a goal in each of the first six he was dropped after the Round 8 loss to North Melbourne and didn't reappear in the seniors until Round 18. He kicked seven goals in the next four matches but was then dropped again and finished the season with the Casey Demons.

Early in the 2012 season Dunn spent much of his time as a pinch-hitting forward who was regularly used as the substitute, but spent much of the second half of the year playing in defence. Despite being available as an Unrestricted Free Agent, Dunn was not selected by any other club and received a contract extension at the end of the year.

After another rocky start in 2013 Dunn eventually found his niche in defence and eventually finished sixth in the club's Best and Fairest. In 2014 he further improved his performances, and spent almost the entire season playing in defence where he proved to be a tough opponent for mid-sized and tall forwards alike. He was rewarded with a three year contract extension.

He continued in defence in 2015 and finished 10th in the Best and Fairest but fell out of favour in 2016, playing just four games and none after Round 6.

At the end of the season he was traded along with pick 51 for Collingwood's pick 47. Quickly established himself in the Pies defence, and was heading for the first finals campaign of his career in 2018 before suffering a season ending knee injury. On his return in 2019) he injured his knee again and missed the full year, returning for two games in ((2020.

Dunn played for West Coburg in 2021.
