At Hawthorn as a VFA side from 1922 to 1924, defender Pickford made his league debut when they joined the VFL in 1925. He spent four years at Hawthorn for just seven career wins before returning to the Association with Brighton in 1929.

Pickford was cleared to Melbourne before the 1931 season but didn't play a senior game. Cleared again the next year, Pickford played two games but failed to register a win, leaving with a career winning percentage of just 13.1%, one of the worst in VFL/AFL history.
