Fitzroy Seconds player who trained in the 1933 pre-season. His playing rights were held by Fitzroy. In 1932 he'd won the best and fairest player for the League Sub Districts competition.
Rutherford became captain of Ivanhoe when they joined the amateur competition in 1934, leading the club to three consecutive premierships that carried them to A Grade, and 60 games in a row. Ivanhoe's Best and Fairest award is named after him.
Son of a former Collingwood player.
