Originally picked up by the Bulldogs with selection 56 in the 2000 National Draft, Cross played 10 games in two years with them before becoming a fixture in their successful sides of the late 2000's.

He won a Rising Star nomination in 2004, the Bulldogs Best and Fairest in 2008 and represented Australia twice in International Rules in 2010.

With the Dogs seeking to blood younger players, Cross was forced out at the end of 2013 and joined Melbourne as a delisted free agent for one year with an option for a second.

On his debut he was the seventh oldest player ever to join Melbourne from another VFL/AFL club. He played the first 13 games of the season before suffering a fractured leg in the Round 14 game against North Melbourne. Returning late in the year he played the last four games of the season but failed to appear in another win.

In 2015 Cross played every game for the season and finished sixth in the club's Best and Fairest but retired after he was not offered a contract for 2016. He instead accepted a role as a development and rehabilitation coach.

Cross won an Ovens & Murray League premiership with Albury in 2016.
