Initially drafted by North Melbourne as a 15-year-old in 1990, a then 168cm Ellis played for their Under 19s as a rover. By the time the Under 19s were abolished and he moved to the Western Jets, he had grown 22cm and become a defender. He was recruited by Footscray with selection #47 in the 1993 Pre-Season Draft, and debuted the next year. Ellis suffered from stress fractures in 1995 and considered retiring to become a pilot. After overcoming his initial injury issues, he struggled with hamstring trouble in 1996. One of the league's most improved players in 1997, he played every game of the Bulldogs' Preliminary Final season. A knee operation kept him out of the second half of 2000 but he played all of 2001 before being traded to the Demons.
Ironically, Ellis' Melbourne career had a delayed start while he served a two match suspension for striking new captain David Neitz the previous season. He had established a spot in the Demon defence when, after returning from a mid-year suspension, he suffered a season-ending knee injury against his old side. Ellis aimed for a comeback in 2003 but suffered further setbacks and retired at the end of that year.
After his retirement, Ellis founded the St. Lenny clothing brand. The business collapsed, but he recovered with the profitable swimwear range Triangl.
