A prolific goalkicker in the Yarra Valley League, Love kicked more than 100 goals in 1947 and had a chance to win the Grand Final but missed a kick after the siren. Played in Melbourne's Thirds in 1948 before being promoted to the senior side the following year.

Never more than a fringe player in four years with the Demons he was cleared to VFA side Box Hill at the second attempt in June 1952. Brunswick had attempted to sign him at the start of the season. He captain-coached in Mustangs from 1955, and played representative football for the VFA in 1957 and 1958. In 1959 he took over as coach of Ringwood and led them to a premiership.
