The son of Tony Sullivan played Under 19s and Reserves football in 1991 wearing number 55, but impressed and was promoted to the senior list with the same number that his father had worn. He had earlier been a member of Richmond's Under 15 development squad.

After three seasons as a rover/half-forward - missing all of 1993 but playing in a Reserves premiership - Sullivan was swapped to Richmond for Pick 76 at the 1994 National Draft.

Sullivan remained at the Tigers until the end of 1996 when he was delisted. He trained with the Western Bulldogs with a view being picked up in that year's draft but was not selected and later played for Frankston in the VFA.

In 2003 he was at Mt Eliza where he spent four years as an assistant coach.
