Under 19s and Reserves player from 1982 to 1984 before playing his sole senior match in 1985. During the week after his debut, where he had been promising with 12 touches, Hutchinson received burns when battery acid from a car he was working on as part of his job splashed on his face.
He didn't play for the rest of the year, and despite winning that year's Reserves Best and Fairest, joined VFA side Frankston in 1986. He played in a VFA representative side that year.
In 1987 Hutchinson joined WAFL side Subiaco and remained with the club until 1993 - playing 105 games for 44 goals and appearing in the 1988 premiership side. In the 1990 Pre-season Draft, West Coast used selection #38 on him but he didn't play any senior games. Returned to Subiaco and stayed there until the end of 1993.
