The first player from the Tiwi Islands to represent Melbourne, Wonaeamirri was selected in the 2007 rookie draft after playing 13 senior SANFL games the previous year. He was then elevated to the senior list early in 2008 to replace Jack Grimes who had suffered a long-term injury.
After an exciting first season, including a starring role in the amazing comeback against Fremantle in Round 7, 2008, Wonaeamirri was named for the Indigenous All-Stars side and was one of his side's best in their pre-season match against Adelaide. He starred in the first intra-club game of 2009 before succumbing to a hamstring injury. Soon after returning from that injury he hurt his knee and couldn't find fitness again in time to play a game during the season.
At the end of 2009 he signed a new two year deal with the club. Wonaeamirri injured his hamstring again in the 2010 pre-season, and once more on making his return in a practice match with the Casey Demons. He eventually returned to senior football in round 9 that year, and though he was dropped again not long after he returned to the side later in the season and played eight matches for the year.
In the off-season Wonaeamirri's father died in a car crash and his mentor Maurice Rioli off a heart attack. He returned to the club and played five of six games between Round 3 and Round 8 but midway through the year returned to the Tiwi Islands. He came back to Melbourne but injured his ankle in a Casey Demons reserves match and did not play again that year.
He was delisted before the final 2011 list lodgement when the club were unable to make contact with him about returning to pre-season training and resumed playing for the Tiwi Bombers, where he stayed until 2014.
In 2015 he played a one-off game for Kilcunda Bass Panthers along with ex-teammates Liam Jurrah and Aaron Davey.
