The locals had two easy chances to score the opening goal before eventually registering it. After Garton replied the play was in the Hobartians favour for some time before Stiffe scored the second against the run of play.

Railway took the lead with the only two goals of the second quarter, and they opened the scoring in the third quarter before Melbourne fought back to be just one goal behind at the last change. As the teams tired neither side scored a goal until the dying minutes when McCrindle equalised for the visitors.
