Biggest loss in Round 7
After two disappointing losses in a row to other top four contenders the Demons took on the defending premiers - who found themselves in the unusual position of three wins and three losses - and surprised the Hawks with the first two goals of the match.
From there it was one way traffic, with Hawthorn kicking the last six goals of the first quarter to open a commanding lead. They pushed on in the second with four goals to one before a dominant eight goal third quarter left them 86 points in front at the last change.
The margin briefly passed the club's largest ever loss against Hawthorn of 115 points in Round 21, 1983 before two late goals brought the margin to just over 100 points - leaving it as their second worse defeat against the Hawks since 1925. It was Melbourne's 8th loss by over 100 points since Round 1, 2008.
Best were Pedersen, McDonald and Cross.
Billy Stretch replaced Christian Salem when Salem suffered a hamstring injury. Jesse Hogan was a late withdrawal (general soreness) and was replaced by Cameron Pedersen.
