The match was originally scheduled for Carrara, moved to Marrara, then back to the Gold Coast again due to COVID restrictions. Melbourne flew to Queensland on Saturday 30 July, only to land and discover that snap restrictions were in place, and flew back home to play the next day. For the first time they were the away team in a game against an interstate side in Melbourne.
The 14th placed Gold Coast stuck with the 'away' side during the first quarter, but conceded two late goals that left them 20 points behind at the first change. The next two quarters were a disaster for them, conceding 11.10 to a single point, leading Melbourne 95 points in front at the last change. The margin climbed to over 100 points briefly at the start of the last term, before the Demons eased off, allowing Gold Coast to kick the last goal and reduce the margin to less than the century.
Best were Oliver, Petracca and Jackson . James Jordon replaced Tom McDonald (back) at three quarter time. Jack Viney was suspended for two games for serious misconduct (elbowing an opponent while on the ground).
