Aiming to snap a losing streak at Docklands dating back to when they toppled the Bulldogs in Round 19, 2007, the Demons found themselves more than 30 points behind for the second time in three weeks - and nearly pulled off another miraculous comeback.
After kicking the first goal of the game the Demons conceded the next seven, and were 35 points down at the 12 minute mark of the second quarter. Two late goals kept them within striking distance before they kicked the first three of the third quarter to find themselves just six points behind.
The Bulldogs rallied to kick three of the next four before three late goals gave the Demons a one point lead going into the last quarter. They extended the gap six when Neville Jetta won a 50m penalty to goal from the square, but the Bulldogs then kicked two in a row to extend the margin back to seven.
Ruckman Mark Jamar kicked his third to reduce the margin to a point again, and when Jack Grimes goalled at the 22 minute mark the Demons were six points in front. They didn't score again, and fell victim to two late goals from Bulldog rookie Marcus Bontempelli, including a goal of the year contender snap from the pocket which ultimately sank them.
With the gap at six points the Demons had several late attacking opportunities but the Bulldogs held firm to win.
Best were Howe, Jamar and Frawley. Neville Jetta was suspended for one match for a bump deemed rough conduct against Fletcher Roberts.
Dom Barry replaced Dean Terlich in the last quarter.
In a curtain raiser the Melbourne FC Women played their second match, defeating the Bulldogs 10.12.72 to 4.2.26.
