Voted Best First Year Player in the Under 19s in 1963, Stewart played for a VFL Under 19 state side in 1964 and made his first senior appearance in the 1965 Night Series.

He played his first VFL game the next year, and played 17 in total before being cleared to Prahran in April 1968.
