The highly touted ruckman/key position player who captained South Australia at the 2002 Under 18 national championships was selected with Melbourne's first pick after their 2002 finals campaign. He was drafted despite not having yet played a senior game with Norwood.
Smith failed to make an impact across three games in his debut season then missed almost three years of senior football due to poor form and injuries. A wrist injury destroyed his 2005 pre-season before he suffered a knee injury during the year which kept him out for 15 weeks.
After failing to add another senior game for what would have been the third consecutive year Smith was shockingly thrust back into the side in the second week of the 2006 finals after Mark Jamar suffered an injury. Smith failed to fire in his comeback game and was delisted at the end of that season.
Smith played in both the 2005 and 2006 Sandringham VFL premiership sides. In 2007 he joined the Box Hill Hawks.
