The son of the president of the ACT Football League, Mahoney was drafted by Melbourne at the end of 1988 after his first full season of senior football. He had played as a ruckman and full forward but was selected by the Demons to play in the ruck only. He had also had offers from Adelaide and Tasmanian clubs but chose to join the Demons.

Mahoney was close to selection at the end of 1989 before suffering cracked ribs late in the season. He impressed in the match against Geelong played in Toronto but didn't debut until the last four games of the 1990 home and away season before being dropped for the finals.

A bad run with injuries cost him the entire 1991 season with injury. He missed six weeks with a hamstring injury, then returned and hurt his other hamstring and finally injured his quad. After a delayed start to 1992 due to a knee arthroscopy, Mahoney returned for two games late in the year before being delisted.

In 1993 he joined VFA side Frankston but suffered a knee injury in his first practice game and only played a handful of games with them over two years.
