The former top full-back in the Public Schools competition played in the Seconds in 1950 before making his senior debut and was used sparingly by the Demons before joining Carlton in 1953.

He spent two seasons with the Blues and won a Reserves flag in his first year before moving to VFA side Camberwell where he played six matches in 1955.

In 1973 McKaige's four sons, Cameron, Rohan, Andrew and Mark all signed with the Demons to ensure that they weren't residentially tied to Richmond. At the time Cameron was just five years old, the youngest person ever to be signed to a league club. Rohan and Andrew later played Under 19 and Reserves football with the Demons.

Later served as President of the Past Players and Officials Association.
