Initially an Under 19s player as a 15-year-old in 1982, Nichols took another four years to make his senior debut despite being senior listed in 1985. After his long wait he played four games in five weeks, dropped back the Reserves and was dumped at the end of the year.
Nichols joined Amateur side Old Melburnians in 1987 and played there until 1994, where he was captain for two years and represented Victoria eight times. In his last season he was best on ground in a premiership win.
Nichols returned to the club as a director in November 2013, before resigning during 2018.
