Cox played 16 games for Fitzroy between 1980 and 1983 before joining the Demons. The utility player had been set to join Essendon, but they didn't want to pay the Lions' asking price. He suffered a hamstring injury on his Melbourne debut, and the injury reoccurred as he returned through the Reserves. Cox didn't play seniors again until Round 20, was suspended for two games the next week after being reported three times. He nearly left the club in the 1985 pre-season when work commitments clashed with training, but remained and played eight games. He added two more games in 1986, but a serious shoulder dislocation in an early 1986 Reserves game meant he didn't play seniors again after Round 2.

After 13 games in three seasons, Cox joined the new formed Brisbane Bears in 1987. He was knocked out early in his only game for them, injured his ankle in a QAFL game, hurt his knee on return from that, and was dropped from Brisbane's list in the 1988 pre-season.

Cox's son Nik played for Essendon from 2021.
