Hughes was initially drafted by the Demons after winning the Sandringham Reserves Best and Fairest in 2005 - and playing in their senior premiership side that year.

He also appeared in Sandringham's 2006 Premiership, but was often injured and Melbourne delisted him.

Re-drafted by the Demons before the 2009 season he spent the season at Sandringham, and while he often showed promise he couldn't break into the seniors before injury ended his year late in the season.

Hughes was eventually selected to debut against the Western Bulldogs in Melbourne's only Friday night game of the 2010 season, finally wearing number 38 in a senior match after being assigned it almost five years before.

He kicked his first goal in the last quarter to put the Demons nine points in front but they went on to lose the match. He played the next week before being dropped to the VFL again where he spent the rest of the season before being delisted at the end of the year.

In 2011 Hughes played for Subiaco in the WAFL. He trained with St Kilda at the end of that season but wasn't drafted and returned to Victoria to play with the Box Hill Hawks. He moved to Port Melbourne in 2013, then South Croydon in 2014 and 2015.
