Debuted in the Thirds in 1951 and broke into the senior side three years later. At the start of 1954 he trained with Moorabbin before returning to Melbourne. After playing 20 games in three seasons, Wilson applied to leave the Demons in the 1957 pre-season. Carlton, Richmond and North Melbourne, tried to win the services of the ruckman/defender, and he applied for a clearance to the Blues but was refused. He was also linked with South Melbourne, where his father had played three seasons in the Seconds from 1929.

After another clearance request - this time to Richmond - was refused, Wilson stayed with the Demons and played first ruck in a premiership side. In the losing 1958 Grand Final he played in a back pocket.

At the end of 1959 Wilson joined Horsham as coach and led them to a premiership in his first season. They won further premierships in 1962 and 1963. He later served as Reserves coach in 1978.

His brother Brian did a pre-season with the Demons in 1956 but was not signed.
