After playing 20 games in three seasons, Wilson applied to leave the Demons in the 1957 pre-season. Carlton, Richmond and North Melbourne, tried to win the services of the ruckman/defender, and he applied for a clearance to the Blues but was refused.

After another clearance request - this time to Richmond - was refused, Wilson stayed with the Demons and played first ruck in a premiership side. In the losing 1958 Grand Final he played in a back pocket.

At the end of 1959 Wilson joined Horsham as coach and led them to a premiership in his first season. They won further premierships in 1962 and 1963. He later served as Reserves coach in 1978.

His brother Brian did a pre-season with the Demons in 1956 but was not signed.
