Born and schooled in Western Australia, Turner was one of the most sought after recruits from the country when Melbourne captured his signature in 1956. The defender found it hard to break into the strong Demons side for more than a handful of games in each of the four years he was on the senior list.

In Round 12, 1958, after three matches as a reserve over two seasons, he was switched forward. He played seven matches in a row but the experiment was not a success - he had a better goalkicking run two seasons later when he kicked five goals in five matches during 1960.

He returned for eight further games in 1961 but despite impressive form in Reserves games failed to kick any further goals, failing as a forward before being moved into defence.

Played for Oakleigh from 1962 to 1965 and later coached Warragul.
