Coming to the club just after they had surprisingly won the 1900 premiership, Coutie was one of the VFL's finest forwards in an era when the Fuschias never once finished in the top four.
Coutie represented Victoria in 1903 and again in 1904 when he topped the league goalkicking. That year he kicked the then massive eight goals in a game against Geelong.
Having already sat on match committee since 1905 he became captain in 1907. He moved to Euroa the next year but continued to play on and kicked 37 goals - including eight against St. Kilda in round 14. That year he captained the VFL against the Bendigo League.
Reappointed captain in 1910, he served in that capacity until his retirement midway through 1911 - a week before his wedding. He returned for six games with VFA side Port Melbourne the next year, and kicked five goals for Melbourne in a 1913 pre-season game but couldn't be induced to play on.
In a low scoring era, Coutie had proved himself as a tremendous mark with great ball skills. He was chaired from the ground after his last match. He played as an amateur through his career.
A champion swimmer during his career he won the Melbourne Swimming Club championship in 1903 and held the Victorian quarter mile record. He played as an amateur throughout his career.
