Started his career with the Collingwood Under 19s in 1967 but failed to break into the senior side at and was cleared to Melbourne. Played one match in 1969 before being dropped from the senior list at the end of the year. He joined West Perth and played in their 1971 premiership before retiring at the end of 1973.

His father Jack played eight games for Collingwood in the 1940s, and his uncle was former Demon Billy Deans
