"Bomber" Riley was assistant coach of his old side Claremont in their 1993 premiership year, then graduated to senior coach of a grand final side the next year.

He was development coach of Fremantle from 1995 to 1997 and assistant coach from 1998 to 2000. Riley then returned to Claremont for two seasons before joining the Demons as defensive coach in 2003.

Took over as caretaker coach with the resignation of Neale Daniher. Presided over as many wins in the remainder of 2007 as his successor would in all of 2008. Riley put himself in the mix to take the senior role permanently at the end of the year but missed out to Dean Bailey and crossed to Carlton to join their coaching panel. He then served as an assistant at Gold Coast, before coaching amateur side St. Bernard's from 2016, taking them to a B Section premiership in 2018.
