A 1959 Under 14 Victorian representative, Wight was recruited to the Demons by Jim Cardwell in 1962. As a schoolboy he was ferried to training at the MCG with teammate Bob Stewart by senior player Bryan Kenneally who was a teacher at a nearby school.
Wight played for the Thirds in 1961 and 1962 before being promoted to the senior list in 1963 where he wore number 11.
In 1965 he joined VFA side Dandenong, and took up his first job as an accountant after Melbourne had paid for his tuition during his time at the club.
After leaving Dandenong, Wight played for Garfield in West Gippsland for another 2-3 years before hanging his boots up. He then coached St Gerard's in Dandenong for three years where his son played.
Wight relocated to Magnetic Island, Queensland in 1990 to run a business then became a firefighter with the Queensland Fire Service until retirement.
