A former Under 19 Australian volleyball international, Sellar was selected by the Crows with pick 14 in the 2006 National Draft.

After one game in 2008 he played 11 in 2009 and just nine in total over the next two years before being delisted.

Initially used as a forward and backup ruckman Sellar struggled with the Demons but soon found a role as a key position defender in the void left by the Mark Neeld experiments with playing Colin Garland and Jared Rivers in the forward line.

Later in the season he was used as a forward again, and had more success with eight of his nine goals for the year coming in the final five weeks of the year. After initially signing on a one year contract he won an extended deal at the end of 2012.

A five goal haul in a 2013 pre-season match against Port Adelaide saw him starting the year as a forward, but he was dropped after contributing just one goal in the first three matches of the season.

He returned for a three week stint as a defender a month later before being dropped again, and his last match came as a late replacement when forward Chris Dawes injured himself in the warmup of Melbourne's last game of the year. Sellar was then delisted and signed with WAFL side South Fremantle for 2014. Returned to Glenelg for two seasons from 2016.
