The older brother of Shane McGrath played a pair of games for Melbourne as a follower/forward while stationed with the RAAF at Point Cook. He had just transferred from the army, bringing him back to Victoria.
With his opportunities at Melbourne limited, McGrath joined Carlton in 1945. VFA side Coburg also lobbied for his services, and named him in their side the same week he debuted for the Blues. After eight games he was told he wouldn't be selected to play finals and retired from VFL football.
In 1951 McGrath was captain/coach of Charlton in the North Central League. After his football career he became president of Boort and Chairman of the North Central League.
His uncles were Con and Pat Hickey, former Fitzroy players.
