The father of Don, Denis, Ted and John Cordner earned a spot in the side during his last year of high school, but then transferred to University to pursue his medical studies.
Along with his brother Cordner, Edward played in Metropolitan League premiership sides in 1906 and 1907. When the team joined the VFL in 1908, their champion centre-half back went with them and he served as vice-captain in 1909 and 1910.
During World War I Cordner served with the 6th Australian Field Ambulance.
Cordner later served on the committee of the Melbourne Cricket Club, representing the MCC on the football club committee at various times between 1907 and 1914.
