A former state schoolboy tennis champion, and 1942 Scotch College football premiership captain, Heywood made his debut for Melbourne in 1943 before becoming a regular the next season. After 16 games in 1944, Heywood served with the RAAF during World War II. After being discharged in 1946 he focused on tennis, also playing in premierships with University Blacks in 1946 to 1947.
Despite not having played top level football since Round 18, 1944 Heywood and fellow Uni Black Denis Cordner were surprise selections for the 1948 Preliminary Final as the Demons battled an injury crisis. He played in the drawn 1948 Grand Final but made way for the returning Robert McKenzie in the winning replay. He returned to play in that year's latest University Blacks premiership.
Heywood retired at the end of 1951, returning to University Blacks, then becoming a respected football and sports commentator.
