Bell was drafted using the pick gained by the controversial trade of Shane Woewodin to Collingwood. The former AIS Academy player was an All-Australian in the 2002 National Under 18 championship while playing for South Australia, and appeared in one SANFL senior game with Glenelg before being drafted.
He spent the first half of 2003 developing in the VFL before a finger injury ended his year. He debuted in late 2004 and played three games for the season. Over the next two years, Bell was a regular when not injured. He added 25 games, but missed the losing 2005 Elimination Final while hurt. He qualified to play in the Sandringham VFL premiership sides in both years. He finally played finals in 2006, and became a regular during the club's disastrous 2007 campaign. He played 17 games before his year was ended by a heavy hit from Magpie Ben Johnson in Round 20.
Bell played a career high 18 games in 2008, but fell out of favour the next year and was in the side just three times before a season-ending shoulder injury in Round 15. Despite speculation linking him to Carlton at the end of 2009 he remained at Melbourne. A serious shoulder injury in a practice match kept him out of the first half of the year. He returned to the VFL with Casey during the season but wasn't chosen for a senior game, and was not offered a new contract.
In March 2011 Bell revealed that he was seeking compensation from the Demons for brain damage suffered from repetitive concussions suffered during his footy career.
