The son of former Carlton legend Ken Hunter was drafted with a reputation for fearlessness and strong marking, but
was undersized for AFL football and didn't add significant extra weight. Carlton had the chance to take him under the father/son rule but believed he was too lightly built. Ironically it was the same reason Richmond rejected his father in the 1980s.

At the start of his first year on the list Hunter was 5 kilograms lighter than any other player in the competition, but had drawn level with the next closest player by the time of his debut. He was given his opportunity in the midst of a losing streak towards the end of the 2003 season but struggled in two heavy defeats and failed to play another senior game.

Hunter also played for Carlton in the VFL during 2002. When he left Melbourne he joined Box Hill in the VFL in 2005 where he stayed for three seasons. In 2008 he played for Balwyn in the Eastern Football League before joining Sandringham in 2009 where he remained for two seasons.
