The son of Brent Crosswell could have played for any of his father's clubs under the rules at the time, but it was the Demons who drafted him with their last selection in the 1988 Draft. He had played one season of season football in the Bendigo League before being selected.

He made his debut for the Demons after just one game in the Under 19s and three in the Reserves - in which he demonstrated the same fiery temper as his father by being suspended for two matches. Kavanagh left Melbourne after two games in 1989. He didn't play a game in 1990 after first undergoing an ankle reconstruction after the 1989 season, then missing five weeks in the middle of 1990 with fractured ribs.

He retired from AFL football after being dropped from the Reserves finals squad, believing he didn't have what it took to make it as a league player. He then rejoined Castlemaine, before reappearing on the AFL scene for eight games with Fitzroy throughout 1993 and 1994.
