The son of Brent Crosswell could have played for any of his father's clubs under the rules at the time, but it was the Demons who drafted him with their last selection in the 1988 Draft.

He made his debut for the Demons after just one game in the Under 19's and three in the reserves - but in a demonstration of the fiery temperament of his father he'd already suffered a two match suspension in the reserves before his debut debuting.

Kavanagh left Melbourne after two games in 1989 and rejoined Castlemaine but reappeared on the AFL scene for eight games with Fitzroy throughout 1993 and 1994.
