The tough follower played 81 games for Subiaco between 1927 and 1931, as well as eight games for Western Australia, before crossing to Melbourne to join Footscray.

After being dropped from the Tricolours side midway through 1934 he asked for a clearance, and both South Melbourne and St Kilda tried to sign him but Footscray retained his services - and in 1936 he was named captain at the Western Oval. He was only captain for a season, and was cleared to Melbourne halfway through 1937. St Kilda had again sought to sign him, but he was swung towards Melbourne by his employer being involved with the club.

He played out the rest of the season with the Redlegs before leaving the club at the end of the year.

During his time in Perth he also played for the Subiaco cricket club.
