Three straight losses had already ruined Melbourne's chances of qualifying for the finals, but in freezing cold conditions they almost suffered further indignity - struggling to a solitary goal at three quarter time before belatedly taking advantage of the howling, cold wind to kick four goals unanswered in the final term. The wind ruined the game as a spectacle, but Melbourne's poor forward play was their downfall.
With much of the scoring towards one end Essendon took full advantage in the first and third quarters, while Melbourne only managed six straight behinds while using it in the second. The Same Olds had the first goal of the game in the opening minute and Melbourne were behind for the rest of the day. Once their vigorous attacking had resulted in no goals during the second quarter they were finished.
The late burst of goals narrowed the margin but they dropped to 2-6 for the season, two games and percentage out of the four.
Best were Chadwick, Donaldson, and Streeter.
