Melbourne went into their last engagement of the season with little to play for, too far behind 16th placed Greater Western Sydney to rise up the ladder and with 18th placed St Kilda facing a near impossible task of beating Adelaide to leapfrog them the next day.

North too went into the game with little to play for, they had sewn up a finals berth and already knew that they would meet Essendon the following week courtesy of the Bombers' draw earlier that day. They sent out a weakened lineup, but were still able to kick the first three goals of the game.

The Demons hit back to be level at quarter time, and again at half time before North kicked away in the third quarter. The Kangaroos pulled away in a free scoring last highlighted by defender Tom McDonald kicking his first and secnd career goals within the space of 30 seconds.

Best were Kent, Tyson and McDonald.

Aidan Riley replaced Max Gawn during the second quarter when Gawn suffered a knee injury. Dom Barry was a late replacement for Christian Salem who was ill.

Chris Dawes was suspended for one week for striking and Jordie McKenzie fined $900 for making negligent contact with an umpire.
