After eight losses in a row Melbourne were given next to no chance travelling to Perth, a city they had not won in for 10 years, to play a West Coast who were still some hope of playing in the finals as long as they kept winning and continued to enhance their percentage.
The Eagles did their bit, opening up a 31-0 lead in the first quarter before the Demons kicked a goal through Bernie Vince. West Coast continued to pull away, opening up a 77 point lead in the third quarter before Melbourne stuck back to win the last by five points and avert a disaster.
Best were Vince, Jones and Fitzpatrick.
Christian Salem replaced Colin Garland in the third quarter. Garland suffered a knee injury in the first quarter but had returned to play before eventually succumbing to it.
Nathan Jones was fined $1950 for making contact with an umpire.
