With the Cats still holding slim chances of sneaking into the finals, Gary Ablett kicked 9.5 to take them a step closer and to stick another knife in the back of Ron Barassi as he entered his last month as a senior coach. To compound the misery for Demon fans Steven Icke damaged his knee and required a reconstruction.
Ablett had five at quarter time, had laid another one and the match was over. The Cats field kicking was poor, but their opponents were in no shape to take advantage as they were several times worse. The margin snuck out at every quarter, and even in the last term when Geelong had nearly stopped to a walk they still manage to outscore the Demons.
Curiously Barassi held his post-match interview inside a sauna and was understated when he sad that Ablett's performance "didn't help our cause".
Best for the Demons were Gerard Healy, Adrian Battiston and Ted Fidge.
