Trapped in a one battle with Carlton for the last spot in the final four, Melbourne needed to beat 9th placed Footscray and hope the Blues lost to 7th place St. Kilda.
At half-time the Blues led by just two points but by three quarter time it was obvious they were going to win comfortably and stitch up fourth. In the end they saluted by 55 points and the effort to hold off a fast finishing Footscray was all for naught as the defending premiers missed out.
Deane, Warne-Smith and Johnson were best.
