Before the match the stars of the 1955, 1956 and 1957 premierships were paraded before the crowd - and the contemporary Melbourne side delivered a performance to make them proud.
With a strong breeze blowing through the construction site at the northern end of the ground the two sides initially found it difficult to come to grips with the conditions. The Demons held a slender lead at quarter time, before Collingwood took a small break into half-time.
It was then that Melbourne took over. David Neitz goalled thirty seconds into the third term, and Adem Yze - Kings Birthday specialist - added another. Collingwood kicked two more to retake the lead, before Melbourne slammed on the next nine goals without reply.
13 goals to 4 after half-time told the tale. Yze booted four in the third quarter, but Neitz had to leave the game after hurting his cheekbone whilst laying a bump on Tarkyn Lockyer.
Nathan Brown was fined $2400 for umpire contact
