After their drought breaking first win of the season a week before the Demons came up against the new premiership favourite Magpies and were blown away by Collingwood's start to the match.

Despite being beaten comfortably in the middle of the ground the Demons got the ball forward enough but couldn't convert it into scoring shots, and even when they did they were wasteful and missed easy chances. It took until midway through the second quarter when Collingwood had opened up an eight goal lead for Melbourne to get their first - after which they added another two without reply.

After conceding an early goal in the third quarter the home side cut the margin to just 25 points at the last change before conceding three goals in the first three minutes to throw away any chance of victory. They then struck back with four in a row, including two to substitute Lynden Dunn and one to makeshift forward Jared Rivers, before Collingwood added another four in a row to kill the match off for a second time.

Best were Grimes, Jones and Howe.

Lynden Dunn replaced Brad Green at three-quarter time.

Luke Tapscott was reported for striking Alex Fasolo and suspended for one match.
