Forced to undergo a total reconstruction on his his right knee after injuring it in Round 2, 1983 O'Brien returned with the Reserves late in 1984 and remained on the senior list through 1985 without playing another senior game.

After a handful of reserves games during 1986 he joined North Melbourne but didn't play a match. It took until 1988 for him to restart his VFL career with Essendon where he played three matches.

His brother Dallas won the 1983 Stawell Gift and Paul was Melbourne's representative in the 1982 Grand Final Sprint.
