Forced to undergo a total reconstruction on his right knee after Round 2, 1983, the defender returned with the Reserves late in 1984 and remained on the senior list 1985 without playing another senior game.

After a handful of reserves games during 1986 he joined North Melbourne but didn't play a senior game. It took until 1988 for him to restart his VFL career with Essendon where he played three matches.

His brother Dallas won the 1983 Stawell Gift and Paul was Melbourne's representative in the 1982 Grand Final Sprint.

Notes
May have gone to Prahran after North in 1986. Age 20/10/1991 says he injured his knee jumping up and down while disputing an umpire's decision. Linked to Woodville for 1989 (Inside Football 22/03/1989) but it's not clear if he joined them. May be the Paul O'Brien who coached Old Melburnians to a VAFA B section premiership in 1993
