Defender recruited by Sydney from Sandringham, via a stint in the Hawthorn Under 19s and Reserves. Duursma played two seasons in Sydney before a serious knee injury in 1986. The Swans were in salary cap trouble and sent Duursma to Brisbane for 1987. He had also been approached by Essendon. His start to the year was delayed by further knee surgery, and after breaking down one and a half quarters into his comeback with local side Coorparoo he played just one senior game for the Bears.

In 1988, his old Swans coach John Northey invited him to trial with Melbourne. He was signed, and Northey's faith was repaid with Duursma's career best form. He received plaudits for his job on the dangerous Stephen Kernahan in that year's Preliminary Final and played in the Grand Final.

Duursma required a knee reconstruction after an injury in the 1990 Fosters Cup Semi Final. He returned after five months, then a VFL record, but didn't play another senior game. He rejoined Sandringham as captain in 1991, playing 24 games in total for the Zebras before winning a Goulburn Valley League flag with Rochester in 1992. Aged 37, he was still playing for Tyabb in the Mornington Peninsula League in season 2000.

Duursma's brother Dean was an Under 19s and Reserves player in 1988. His nephew Xavier played for Port Adelaide from 2019.
