A ruckman/forward Wilkinson was on Melbourne's list from 1957 to 1959, but was called up for just one senior game, coming off the bench as a reserve. In 1960 he crossed to Richmond, leading their goalkicking with 21 in his first season.

After 29 games with the Tigers, Wikinson accepted a job as captain/coach of Tasmanian side City-South in 1962. He led them to a premiership in his first year, then won the state title in 1966. He resigned as coach at the end of 1967, but kept playing until the end of 1972. In 1973 he returned as non-playing coach.

He didn't add a single game to his tally in 1959 before joining Richmond for 1960. He kicked 21 goals to top the Tigers goalkicking in his first season, but after just 29 more games he was on the move again - this time to Tasmania.

In 204 appearances as a captain/coach for City-South (now South Launceston) in the NTFA between 1962 and 1972, he won Premierships in 1962 and 1966 as well as a state championship win over Hobart in 1966. In 1973 he served as non-playing senior coach. Wilkinson later worked for ABC as a Tasmanian football commentator and as an administrator for the NTFL. He was part of the City-South Team of the Century, and elected to the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
