McGivern kicked 105 goals at-full forward for Croydon in 1947, and after training with Richmond in September 1947 he instead joined Melbourne the following year.
McGivern missed all of 1949 due to appendicitis before making his senior debut the next season. He started his career with the Demons as a half-forward, but became better known as a defender - including winning the 1952 Best and Fairest.
In 1954 he missed five games after suffering an ankle injury in Round 1 but returned to play 16 matches and a position in the Grand Final.
He played in the winning 1955 Grand Final after missing the first half of the season with a serious thigh injury suffered in the last five minutes of training before Round 1 selection. He returned for a Seconds game in Round 5 and was reinjured, not returning to the senior side until Round 12.
More injury trouble caused him to miss the 1956 Grand Final after hurting his knee and ankle in the Second Semi Final. He retired at the end of that year to return to a role in his family quarrying business.
