Originally taken by the Bulldogs with selection #56 in the 2000 National Draft, Cross played 10 games in two years before becoming a fixture in their side. He won a Rising Star nomination in 2004, the Bulldogs Best and Fairest in 2008 and represented Australia twice in International Rules in 2010.

With the Dogs seeking to blood younger players, Cross was forced out at the end of 2013. He joined Melbourne as a delisted free agent for one year with an option for a second. On debut he was the seventh-oldest player to join Melbourne from another VFL/AFL club. He played the first 13 games of the season before suffering a fractured leg in the Round 14 game against North Melbourne, returning for the last four games.

Cross played every game of 2015, finishing sixth in the club's Best and Fairest. He retired after not being offered a contract for 2016, instead accepting a role as a development and rehabilitation coach. That year he returned to Albury, playing in an Ovens & Murray League premiership.
