Born as Charles Harding, the Tasmanian joined Melbourne as a wingman, but spent much of his career as a defender. Barnes graduated from the Seconds to fill a vacancy in the team in 1927, then played two more seasons.
Joined VFA side Brighton in 1930, where he remained until the end of 1932, then played for Oakleigh in 1934.
